Dr. Polina Baum-Talmor is an Adjunct Professor in the Marine Affairs Program at 91¶ÌÊÓÆµ and a social scientist whose research focuses on maritime labour, wellbeing, and ocean-linked livelihoods. She holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Cardiff University (UK), where her doctoral research examined careers and labour market flexibility in global industries through an in-depth study of seafarers. Her academic background also includes an MA in Anthropology and a BA in Sociology, Anthropology, and Human Resources from the University of Haifa. Dr. Baum-Talmor is a Research Associate at the  and an Associate Fellow of the , and she currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Mission to Seafarers in Halifax (NS, Canada). Her research is grounded in qualitative and participatory methods and addresses key issues such as precarity in maritime employment, recruitment and retention in the shipping industry, seafarers’ wellbeing and food provision at sea, skills and training in the context of digitalization and automation, and the social impacts of regulatory and governance frameworks. More recently, her work has expanded to include community-based research with Mi’kmaw women fishers in Nova Scotia, focusing on gender and lived experiences within fisheries governance. Her work also covered the emotional and social dimensions of environmental change, including climate-related distress, eco-grief, and transformative learning among youth and environmental observers. Through her interdisciplinary lenses, Dr. Baum-Talmor contributes to critical debates on labour issues, sustainability, and governance in global maritime industries, with a strong emphasis on policy relevance, stakeholder engagement, and applied research.
