A studyÌýpermit is a document issued by the Canadian Government that allows international students to study in Canada for a limited time. If your program of study in Canada is longer than six months, youÌýrequireÌýa study permit. 

To extend your stay in Canada as a student, you must renew yourÌýstudyÌýpermit at leastÌý5–6Ìýmonths before it expires.

AÌýprovincialÌýattestationÌýletter (PAL) is a letter provided by the province or territory where you plan to study. It confirms thatÌýyou’veÌýbeen assigned one of the available spaces to study in that province or territory.ÌýIn most cases, you will need a PAL to apply for a study permit.

AÌýtemporaryÌýresidentÌývisa (TRV) allows you to enter (and re-enter) Canada. It is issued by a Canadian Visa Office and placed in your passport. It confirms that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

Travellers who do not require aÌýtemporaryÌýresidentÌývisa (TRV) to enter Canada mayÌýrequireÌýan electronicÌýtravelÌýauthorization (eTA) instead. This type of visa is electronically linked to your passport.

If you are enrolled in a program with a mandatory work-integrated learningÌýcomponentÌý(e.g. co-op, internship, or practicum) you will need aÌýco-opÌýworkÌýpermit.
