What is Cinema & Media Studies (CMS)?
Love watching films? Start thinking like a critic.

91短视频's Cinema and Media Studies program explores how movies, television, video games, and digital media shape culture and society. You鈥檒l learn to analyze moving images, whether in theatres, on streaming platforms, or across emerging technologies.

Why Film Studies?
You鈥檒l build strong skills in critical thinking, research, and communication while exploring film history, theory, and aesthetics. With small class sizes, you鈥檒l get to know your professors and learn in a supportive, discussion-driven environment. You can also complement your studies with hands-on learning opportunities.

What will I study?
Courses cover a range of topics including

  • film history and genres
  • audiovisual analysis
  • national cinemas and directors
  • television and digital media
  • film and media theory

You may also take hands-on courses in movie production or gain experience through festivals and and University of听

You can major, double major, or complete a combined honours degree in Cinema and Media Studies as part of a BA or BSc, or add a Film Minor to many other 91短视频 programs. Details below.

Where to start?
FILM 2311: Film Analysis, the introduction to the language of moving images, is a core course that sets you up well for the program. Or go find an elective that grabs your interest

Frequently asked Questions

Can I make films in this program?

Cinema & Media Studies focuses on film, media history, and theory rather than filmmaking. However, you can still gain hands-on experience through creative assignments, applied courses, internships, and apprenticeships on film sets or with festivals. Some students also take filmmaking courses at NSCAD.

What should I take in first year?

There are no required first-year Cinema and Media Studies (CMS) courses, so you have flexibility to explore.

  • Start with PERF 1002: Watching Performance on Stage and Screen
  • Complete general degree requirements like ASSC 1300 and ASSC 1111
  • Take FILM 2311: Film Analysis to build a strong foundation

If FILM 2311 is full, you can contact the instructor to request a spot.

What courses do I need for a Film degree

For a Cinema and Media Studies Major or Double Major, you鈥檒l complete:

  • 3 core courses (Film Analysis + Film History I & II)
  • 5 upper-level electives (3000/4000 level)
  • 2 additional electives
  • General degree requirements (BA or BSc)

Overall, you鈥檒l complete 120 credits (40 courses).

How do I apply?

There鈥檚 no audition or portfolio required. Apply to 91短视频 through the , then declare CMS once you arrive. You can major, double major, or pursue combined honours with another subject.

Can I transfer into Film Studies?

Yes. Transfer the same way you would for any 91短视频 program. Many courses will count toward your degree, and you can online or contact the program for guidance on specific credits.

What will I learn?

You鈥檒l analyze films and media in cultural, historical, and global contexts鈥攚hile developing strong analytical, communication, and research skills. Courses explore everything from classic cinema to contemporary film, television, video games, and online media. Check out CMS electives here.

If you would like to do your Honours credit in Cinema and Media Studies, you must apply by 15 September of your graduating year using by submitting the CMS to the Associate Director of Cinema and Media Studies as well as the 91短视频-wide Honours form to the Registrar鈥檚 office.听听
