Robert Laprairie learned in his final weeks at Dal that he'd received a top award in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s (CIHR) fellowship program.

On Tuesday, the Government of Canada announced nearly $94-million in funding through its Canada First Research Excellence Fund for the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ-led Ocean Frontier Institute, a partnership with Memorial and UPEI poised to propel Canada to global ocean leadership.

The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) — launched with a $94-million investment from the Government of Canada — will be a global hub for ocean science and help ensure safe and sustainable use of one of Earth’s most precious resources. As part of a partnership between 91¶ÌÊÓƵ and the Interuniversity Institute for Marine Studies in Eilat (Israel), eight students from seven different Israeli universities came to Halifax this summer to learn more about the North Atlantic ocean.

At its annual general meeting last month, the American Fisheries Society presented the Dal-hosted Ocean Tracking Network with its prestigious Conservation Achievement Award, which recognizes significant contributions to fishery conservation or science.
